The Bombardier. Canadair regional jet CRJ-200 (SR20)

The Bombardier CRJ100 and CRJ200 are a family of regional medium—haul aircraft manufactured by the Canadian company Bombardier and based on the Canadair Challenger business jet.The aircraft was developed on the basis of the Canadair Challenger, the project of which was acquired by Canadair from William Lear in 1976.

The Challenger's wide fuselage with a 2+2 seat layout allowed Canadair engineers to increase passenger capacity by simply extending it. There were plans to develop a Challenger 610E for 24 passengers. The project was closed in 1981, but the idea was not abandoned.

In 1987, work began on a much more ambitious project, which in 1989 was officially presented under the name Canadair Regional Jet. The Canadair trademark was retained, despite the fact that the company was bought by Bombardier. The first flight of one of the first three CRJ100 machines was performed on May 10, 1991. The first prototype (C-FCRJ) went into a tailspin on July 26, 1993 and crashed. The type certificate was obtained in 1992, and in the same year the first production aircraft were delivered to customers.The successful CRJ100 model was upgraded to the CRJ200 in 1995 — the aircraft was supplied with new, more economical General Electric CF-34-3B1 engines. The CRJ200 has improved performance characteristics: this type is capable of flying in difficult meteorological conditions and in conditions of high-altitude airfields.

The fifty-seat comfortable lounge, equipped with comfortable leather armchairs, thanks to the available engineering and technical solutions, can easily be converted into a full economy or business/economy class.

Pinnacle Airlines had at its disposal several aircraft of this model in a 44-seat modification (a variant with this layout was named CRJ440), although they were subsequently converted to 50-seater. This modification was created to comply with the terms of the agreement limiting the use of aircraft by regional carriers of large airlines with a passenger capacity of 50 or more people. For the same reason, the 40-seat CRJ200 was sold to Comair at a discount to prevent the purchase of the less expensive and smaller Embraer 135.
