WIKI

Originally conceived and developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force, from an experimental (LWF) concept, for a short-range daytime interceptor, complementary to the powerful and sophisticated F-15 Eagle air superiority. It gradually evolved into the role of a high-performance fighter-bomber, capable of operating in all weather conditions, day and night.

On July 21, 1980, in a ceremony held at Hill Air Force Base in Utah, he was finally officially christened "Fighting Falcon". However among its riders regardless of nationality, it was and remains known and nicknamed Viper.
