Pummeler Recce Floatplane

147k Pilotmario  8.8 years ago

"For any airman or sailor stranded in the middle of the ocean, nothing is more joyous than the sight of a floatplane." -Sarah Boroughs, survivor of Flight 121. The Pummeler Recce Floatplane was a variant of the Pummeler Fighter Navy fitted with floats. Alongside slightly lengthened wings and a much larger propeller, the most distinctive feature is the addition of two large floats. It served as a spotter aircraft for capital ships as well as search and rescue. It also performed some light attack duties. Despite its Recce designation, it retains its eight Mk 4 machine guns in the wings. Coast Guard variants dispensed with the wing guns. Its most famous action was its role in the rescue efforts for survivors of Flight 121, a civilian airline flight which suffered engine trouble and ditched in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea; a Coast Guard Pummeler Recce Floatplane discovered the only four survivors in a life raft. Because the plane could not take off safely with all of them, the pilot, Lt. Amy Greaves, taxied the aircraft 22 miles ot the destroyer PMN Intrepid.
