9.2 years ago
The A-4E was the first of the Skyhawks to be powered by the P&W J52 engine, which was more powerful and reliable than the Wright J65 of the A-4A, B and C. The extra power and the addition of 2 wing pylons allowed a heavier warload. This A-4E of VA-72 "Blue Hawks" of the US Navy is loaded carrying 6 500 Ibs bombs. In 1965 the aircraft this is modeled after and its squadron flew missions over Vietnam from the carrier USS Independence. After service with several other squads and at least 2 more tours of duty in Vietnam, the plane this is modeled after was lost in May 1970 when its engine failed after an aerial refueling.
