In the 1930s, a prototype for a large cruiser by Great Britain intersected with the hull design of the American Iowa-class prototype battleship. Named for Kleiman “Kitty” Sidney, a World War I admiral, the prototype line of ships were to possess potent firepower in the form of armor piercing high explosive capped rounds that could serve in multiple roles besides anti-ship combat. The Americans provided a streamlined design for their Iowa-class battleship in the use of the Sidney-class large cruiser.
The prototype never got beyond planning stages due to the Washington Naval Treaty shutting down the concept.
