History: Designed in late 1948, the CAC C-16A76 Wombat was meant to be a high-speed ground attack fighter, as well as a dive bomber. It had a crew of one pilot. The plane was fast and agile, but that is not what was interesting about it. Because of where the tail wheel was placed and the angle the plane would land at, for carrier landings the arresting hook was placed underneath the cockpit section of the aircraft (although the plane would never take off from an aircraft carrier). About 200 Wombats were made from 1950 to 1953. The low numbers are because of an incident regarding one of the aircraft, the pilot of which was attempting one of, if not the first, in-flight refueling operation in history. After that, only a handful of aircraft were produced and the squadrons that were equipped with them never got to see action.
