Space Shuttle (Autoland)

TRAILER/DEMO HERE

Quick Start Guide

This shuttle can land automatically if you spawn it in following locations:

- Wright Final Approach
- Yeager Final Approach
- Bandit Final Approach

4 Flight Modes

Full-Automatic

How to enter: Activate Group 1
- You don't need to do anything! The shuttle will land automatically.
- All controls are locked.

Semi-Automatic

How to enter: This is the default mode after entering the game (without moving control stick)
- You only need to take care of the landing gear, drogue chute (AG3) and brakes.
- Once you move the control stick more than half, it will switch to manual mode.

Manual

How to enter: Move control stick more than half after entering the game
- Everything is manual except speedbrake.
- You can use throttle to control the assistance level (100% throttle=Maximum assistance).
- Try to align the velocity vector with the guidance indicator for a smooth landing.

Full-Manual

How to enter: Activate Group 2 or deactivate Group 8 (Make sure Group 1 is deactivated)
- Everything is manual, no assistance is allowed.

Introduction

I have been building this space shuttle orbiter for more than one year, and now I am releasing it :)

Features

  • Capable of performing full-automatic landing if spawned in Wright/Yeager/Bandit Final Approach, even in heavy wind conditions.
  • Very accurate body shape. I used the real-world 3D scanned model as reference while building this.
  • Realistic flight performance, weight, and dimensions.
  • Working cargo bay with robotic arm (Canadarm) and a simple satellite.
  • VR cockpit + customized HUD + simple landing guidance system.
  • Mobile friendly with less than 500 parts and less than 2300 performance cost.
  • Cheat mode! You can fly it like a normal airplane (Deactivate AG8). You can also "launch" it to a very high altitude (Launch Countermeasures).

Instructions

AG1 Full Auto Landing Mode
AG2 Full Manual Landing Mode
AG3 Drogue Chute
AG4 Change Shuttle Name
AG5 Fire OMS Engine
AG6 Payload Bay Doors (Use Throttle/Brake to control speed)
AG7 Control Robotic Arm (See description below)
AG8 Manual + Cheat Mode (Fly shuttle like a normal airplane)

Throttle Landing Assistance Level (100% Throttle=maximum assistance)
VTOL Airbrake
Trim Body Flap
FireGuns Fire OMS Engine
FireWeapons Fire OMS Engine (10x power)

Robotic Arm Controls
Pitch Up/Down
Roll Left/Right
Yaw Forward/Backward
VTOL Wrist Pitch
Trim Wrist Yaw

Configure the value of "Shuttle_Name" in variable setters to change the shuttle name
-1 or lower: Random Name
0: Enterprise
1: Columbia
2: Challenger
3: Discovery
4: Atlantis
5: Endeavour
6: Explorer
7 or higher: No name

Tips

  • You can check your landing score and control mode shown on the center cockpit display. You will get a "Perfect Landing" if you socre higher than 9500. Try to touchdown at about 1m/s (3ft/s) sink rate to maximize your landing socre. The softer you touchdown at an ideal speed, the higher the score will be.
  • The ideal landing site is Wright airport, the other two landing sites have too low initial speed, you may find it's difficult to land in manual mode.
  • Make sure you deactivate AG1 if you want manual control.
  • This shuttle may not autoland successfully if you are too off-course, or in heavy tailwind conditions.
  • Keep pressing launch countermeasures button will "launch" this shuttle to a very high altitude. A gyroscope will be activated to simulate RCS controls.
  • Deactivate AG8 to fly it like a normal airplane, use the Throttle for thrust.
  • You can use AG4 to change the space shuttle name if you don't like the random name picked when you spawn the shuttle.

Special Thanks

@BuildModifier Here’s a dedicated AI version that lets you fly the chase plane with it: https://www.simpleplanes.com/a/ujF9ef/Space-Shuttle-v1-1-AI

    HOT FIX v1.1:
I found a bug in my Funky Tree codes☠️, which causes the auto landing to fail in some conditions, now I have fixed it.

It's not easy to be bug-free, especially when dealing with hundreds of lines of funky tree code...

This Craft is not just a plane nor rocket, yet a piece of the true art of the mind.

@YourLocalJetNut330 It's 100% possible, but it's gonna take lots of time to write and test the code!

@Whills do you think you could build an auto launch/land falcon9, starship, superheavy catch, or starship+superheavy? And if you don’t want to build it do you think it’s at least possible to make a automatic superheavy catch?

@Whills I added the given variables, but the parachute won't deploy.

@BuildModifier Thanks! Oh, that's something I haven't considered. Here is my solution: Open the variable setters, change the value of "autoPilotFull" to "1", and the value of "GearControl" to "TarAgl<92?0:1". Then save this build as a dedicated AI plane, and you will always have the automatic landing on.

Amazing replica! I am wondering if it is possible to have the full automatic landing mode be on by default so that I can spawn it, and have it land while flying a chase plane?

@JAGDPANZER131 Well Juno exists but the problem imo is the lack of content while being on Earth
