Upon cancellation of the XAF program, the Navy found itself searching for a way to it's Fixed Wing Array to maintain relevance. With Air Wings composed mainly by rotorcraft and prop aircraft, why don't take the best of both worlds? In true Navy fashion, the resultant aircraft arrived VERY late, it was underpowered,expensive and dangerous to operate. Yet it was a dramatic improvement, and a truly spectacular and complicated solution to a very simple problem.
