Fairey SwordFish
This is the second biplane that I built, I wanted to do something different, and I looked for this two-seater torpedo boat, I built a small platform to separate the torpedo
of the trajectory of the propeller, before releasing it.The plane, when releasing all the bombs, gains agility and turn, but I did not want to abuse the turning speed either, since the original is not very agile as it is a torpedo boat. When taking off, it is not necessary to use flaps, I usually use the flaps to stop it before dropping bombs or to drop sharply into a dive. Finally, I want to say that every time I like biplanes and their history more. I hope you like it, greetings friends! !
AG1 Activate flaps.
AG2 Activate Rear turret
AG3 Activate torpedo arm.
Origins:
The origins of the Swordfish go back to the ministerial specification S.9 / 30, related to the search for a firing and torpedo correction aircraft for the fleet. Fairey Aviation's response was the T.S.R. 1, powered by a 635 hp Bristol Pegasus IIM air-cooled nine-cylinder radial engine, which flew on March 21, 1933. It showed little power and some directional instability, ending up destroyed six months later when unable to get out of a auger.
A modified specification, S.15 / 33, was subsequently issued under which Fairey produced the T.S.R. 2, with an elongated fuselage, revised tail and a 690 hp Bristol Pegasus IIIM3 engine that moved a fixed-pitch Fairey Reed three-bladed propeller. Its structure was essentially metal with fabric covering, and it was fitted with a split-shaft undercarriage that could be replaced by two Fairey single-coil floats. The wings were equipped with Handley Page hyper-lift slots and could be folded back to improve storage capacity. The crew was housed in two open cabins, the navigator and the radio operator sharing one of them, while the pilot was separated in the forward position that was raised. The aircraft, which made its initial flight on April 17, 1934, was capable of reaching a maximum speed at sea level of 235 km / h, exceeding the required performance. Three development prototypes, named Swordfish, were ordered to meet the S.38 / 34 specification; the third aircraft was completed as a seaplane and made its maiden flight on November 10, 1934.
The first production order for a series of 86 copies was placed in 1935, and the first deliveries took place in February of the following year. These aircraft went to Squadron 823, which embarked on HMS Glorious in late 1936. The standard three-seater aircraft had a top speed of 222 km / h and could easily carry the standard 457 mm and 731 kg torpedo; its range in this configuration was 879 km.
Orders continued to flow to Fairey, which by the outbreak of the war had completed or had a total of 689 Swordfish pending delivery. The Mk I seaplanes served with the Catapult Patrols Nos. 701, 702 and 705 of the Navy Air Gun, embarked on battleships, cruisers and battlecruisers of the Royal Navy. The wheel train version constituted 13 squadrons, of which eight went to sea on the aircraft carriers HMS Ark Royal, HMS Argus, HMS Courageous, HMS Eagle, HMS Furious, HMS Glorious and HMS Hermes.
