In 1940, the Netherlands was invaded by Germany, the Dutch Air Force (Luchmacht) was hopelessly out classed by the advanced German Luftwaffe. Although the Dutch successfully held the German advance at the pre war border, the only thing keeping Germany from over-running them was the RAF. Just a mere 20 years earlier, the Dutch aviation company Fokker, was at the forefront of Aviation technology. In co-operation with the British companies, Miles and Supermarine, they experimented with bubble canopy design, which improved the pilots visibility, and the aircrafts aero-dynamics. It was around this time in late 1940 that the Dutch Navy began conversion of a De Zeven province class Cruiser hull, into a carrier. Fokker left at the opportunity, the Luchmacht required aircraft for their "Marine Lucht Vleugel" or Naval Air Wing. Taking design aspects from the Spitfire, Hurricane, Bf-109, P40, and F4F Wildcat. By Spring of 1941, the Aircraft had flown its first flight, although with the Rolls Royce merlin engine. Despite its marvelous performance, the engine was not suitable for the aircrafts intended purpose. It was around this time that Finland was fighting the Winter war. The Finns thankful for the Fokker DXII's supplied sent Diamler Benz DB-605 engines to the Netherlands. Fokker inserted these engines into their aircraft, and it worked perfectly, after the engines were reverse engineered, and slightly modified, they were finally ready. The aircraft was no christened the MV-40 or Marine Vecher 40, in English "Naval Fighter 40". The name given to this aircraft was Visarend, or Osprey in English, since these birds, hunt their prey in the coastal regions. By now it was early December 1941, the MV-40s embarked on the now completed HMNLS Van Ghent, they were competing shake down cruises in the Dutch Caribbean at the time of the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies, while sailing with her task force to the East Indies, she was attacked by Italian aircraft from Italian East Africa, badly damaged, she sailed towards Australia, her Fighter Squadron ZVE-1 Adeelar's was disembarked at Port Darwin, and they flew into Java to participate in the islands defenses, the aircraft faired quite well against the Japanese, who had not yet encountered allied aircraft with such a performance. However only one squadron was available, as the rest were still in Europe, and eventually, all the aircraft were caught on the ground, and destroyed. Fortunately, their pilots survived, and were evacuated, right before the final Dutch capitulation in the east. They once again embarked on the Van Ghent, however en route to Pearl Harbor to join the US Pacific Fleet, she was spotted by Japanese aircraft from Wake Island, they MV-40s successfully defended the ship from Japanese aircraft, however her position was relayed to the Japanese Submarine I-1. She was hit by 2 torpedoes, about 150 miles west of Pearl Harbor, the Cruiser Tromp and several destroyers towed her to Pearl Harbor. The American Carrier Yorktown was also being repaired for the up-coming battle of midway, unfortunately, the Van Ghent could not be repaired in time, so her squadrons were sent to Midway island. During the defense of Midway, the MV-40s faired well against the Japanese, shooting down 10 zeros, 8 Kates, and 4 Vals. However 5 out of the Squadrons 19 aircraft (delivered to Perl Harbor via USS Wasp) were shot down. The 14 remaining aircraft flew out to the USS Enterprise, taking part in the defense of the task force. The MV-40s also escorted the bombers that sunk the Hiryu. After Midway, the MV-40 resumed operations with the Dutch, ZVE-1 participated in the fly over of Tokyo during the Japanese surrender, still wielding the venerable MV-40.
