The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 (NATO reporting name: Fishbed - Fossil Fish) is a jet fighter aircraft, designed by the Mikoyan design bureau, Soviet Union. In Russia, the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 is called the balalaika, because its airframe design resembles the Russian national instrument.[1] The aircraft was designed by Mikoyan-Gurevich, and the first Chief Designer of this design bureau was Mr. Mikoyan. The aircraft's engine was designed by Mr. Gurevich. More than 50 countries on 4 continents have used this type of aircraft. Currently, the MiG-21 is still in service with the air forces of several countries 50 years after it first flew.
The MiG-21 is capable of reaching Mach 2. This speed exceeds the maximum speed of many later modern fighter aircraft. Approximately 11,496 MiG-21s were built (not including about 2,400 Chinese-made Chengdu J-7s based on the MiG-21).
