The Model 82 is a Paternian revolver manufactured by Carlton Manufacturing Company since 1956. It was the secondary standard sidearm of the Paternian Armed Forces between 1959 and 2018, issued to aircrews, Marine security, and gendarmes. Designed for durability and ease of repair, the use of computerized machining eliminated the need for expert gunsmiths to repair them. It introduced Carlton's trademark solid-wall frames, swappable trigger pack. and screw-adjustable cylinder timing.
As their flagship revolver, Carlton offered the Model 82 in over 50 variants. Factory offerings varied by coatings and finishes, grip styles, sights, barrels, calibers from .22 Long Rifle to .357 Magnum, and with either a standard, stainless, or aluminum frame. With service in many military and police forces across dozens of conflicts on 5 continents, it earned a reputation as a lightweight and accurate yet indestructible and unfailing man-stopper. Carlton made over 2 million Model 82s, with most sold commercially for personal self-defense.
While a successful sidearm, the Model 82 was a revolver in a world of rapidly improving semi-automatics. The reliable, high-capacity, semi-automatic pistols of the 1970's persuaded all but the most diehard to switch. Revolvers persisted as either small-frame pocket rockets or large-caliber hand cannons, but the Model 82 was neither small enough to conceal nor big enough for larger magnums. So its popularity faded by the 1990's, and Carlton's flagship revolver became the Model 95, a snub-nose 5-shooter concealable under anything bigger than a bikini.
Today, the Model 82 is considered a relic of a bygone time, one which many reminisce and romanticize, but would do everything in their power to never repeat. It was the weapon of a survivor. Not as fragile or rapid-fire as a semi-automatic; an inelegant weapon for a less civilized time.
Notes
This pistol is representative of a Paternian military Model 82 revolver: a square-butt .38 Special with plastic olive drab grips, phosphate finish, fixed sights, aftermarket grip adapter, and a 4” standard barrel. Alongside it are standard Paternian .38 Special cartridges, from left to right they are: lead round-nose ball, round-nose full-metal jacket, Air Force signal tracers, Gendarmerie jacketed hollowpoint, and target wadcutter. Six lead round-nose ball cartridges are loaded in the cylinder.
