British Airways operated a total fleet of 8 McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 aircraft from 1988 to 1999, it was the last Tri-jet aircraft they had in service after the L-1011 was retired from their fleet in 1991 and the Hawker Siddeley Trident was retired from their fleet in 1985

The aircraft, G-DCIO, was first delivered to British collodion Airways in 1981 before being delivered to British Airways in 1988. It then had its registration changed to N48277 after it went into service with the Wilmington Trust Company. It then had its registration changed again to N189AX after it went into service with Omni Air International Airlines in 2002. The last operator of the aircraft was Centurion Air Cargo when the aircraft was damaged beyond repair on April 28, 2004 due to a runway overran at Bogata International Airport
