The lapana L-221 (pronounced La-pan-a) is a sub-sonic jet fighter made for the checkered republic during the midst of its war with the Bentakona regime. The Checkered republics military requested a high speed jet capable of air to air refueling, able to handle the ema 2200 30mm cannon, and able to carry 4 all new areo-tech aaw11-3 air to air missiles. This was the clear choice for the contract and started production in late may of 1973. With its unique twin fuel probes it was given the nickname catfish as it resembles a catfish. By the end of the year they were able to produce 500 planes in 4 factory's and by the end of the war in 1977 they made a total of 16,000 planes with another 156 being produced. After these 156 the lapana L-221 was discontinued but was still used in active service. During the war only 372 L-221's were shot down or lost, with 79 of the pilots able to eject. After a series of crashes it was investigated to figure out what made 34 of these planes crash. It was found that after many high g maneuvers the bolts that hold the primary wings in place brake off and cause the wing to fly off. After the issue is fixed the planes are slowly pushed out of service, and by the end of 2064 it is projected that it will be totally fased out of active service and put in the reserves but by then it will be almost 100 years old and is doubtful that it will stay in the reserves.
