the XB15 represented another step along the road to the B17. like the B10 it topped out around 200 mph but could carry more than 5 times the bomb load (in fact more than the B17) but was very large and in some ways shared more with the later B36 than wartime bombers. it's lack of speed led to its use as a testbed only. it might be useful to think of the B17 as the eventual middle child of the B10 and XB15. the vtol controls operate the gears
