Plasma boltguns are R.M.A.W.s (Rapid-Fire Mass Accelerator Weapons) developed by the Continuum R&D division as a more powerful and compact alternative to the standard railguns and coilguns of spaceborne warships. Plasma boltguns function similarly to rapid-fire railguns, only that instead of firing solid projectiles, plasma boltguns fire plasma bolts coated in a non-polarized energy field. This energy field acts as the bolt's jacket, which disintegrates upon hitting its target, inflicting impact damage, while the plasma bolt continues to travel and sears right through its target, dealing additional impact and energy damage. The energy field also contains the plasma during the firing process, for without it, the electromagnetic rails would not be able to propel the plasma bolt, thus rendering it inert and useless in combat. The drawback of using plasma boltguns is their insanely high power consumption. This leads to these kinds of weapons only being used sparingly during combat (their damage output compensates for this drawback).
