Sukhoi Su-17 (1949)

11.2k AircraftoftheRedStar  6.7 years ago

This one was submitted late because of a very busy and packed week. The nose section on this one was hard to figure out because it can detach from the rest of the plane.
AG-1: Emergency nose separation.
AG-2: Nose parachute (highly recommended for use after AG-1 has been pressed).

History:
The Su-17 was designed in parallel with the Su-15 from the same year. Both aircraft were designed to closely match the theoretical TsAGI calculations for supersonic performance. The Su-17 had a 50 degree swept wing fitted with wing fences, airbrakes, and boosted controls. A unique feature was that in addition to an ejection seat, the entire nose section of the aircraft could separate from the rest of the airframe in an emergency. Armament was to be two 37mm N-37 cannon in the bottom of the fuselage. The project was canceled with no flights due to problems with wing structure (that were similar to the problems encountered on the Su-15), ongoing difficulties with the development of the Lyulka TR-3 turbojet engine, and the closure of the Sukhoi OKB. The only Su-17 example was eventually used as a gunfire target, and the name was later reused for an entirely different fighter-bomber.
