Description and History

The F/I-13 "Cyclone," introduced in 1958, was a groundbreaking fighter/interceptor powered by a P&W J57-P-21 engine, achieving speeds over Mach 1.2. Its arsenal included 4 radar-guided interceptor missiles, 2 heat-seeking guardian missiles, and twin 20mm guided gun pods mounted on each wing. These pods could articulate 30° left and right and 70° vertically, offering unmatched flexibility in combat. A helmet-mounted HUD displayed a reticle showing where the guns were aimed, enabling pilots to track targets effectively.

The revolutionary auto-aiming gun system was the brainchild of aerospace engineer Dr. Charles "Charlie" Whitaker. A visionary in fire-control systems, Whitaker developed the gun pods to address the limitations of fixed weaponry in fast-paced dogfights. His system used data from the aircraft's radar and IR sensors, processed by a cutting-edge flight computer. This allowed the gun pods to adjust their aim automatically, aligning with the target's predicted position.

The helmet-mounted HUD provided a simple yet critical function: displaying the reticle that indicated the pods’ aim point. Pilots could focus on flying and targeting without manually aiming the guns, allowing for quicker engagement in chaotic air battles.

Whitaker's system was met with resistance during development, as many in the USAF leadership believed missiles had rendered guns obsolete. However, the Fighter Mafia recognized the system's potential to restore close-range combat superiority. With their support, Whitaker's design was integrated into the F/I-13, making it a formidable contender in air-to-air combat.

Dr. Whitaker’s work revolutionized air combat systems, blending automated targeting with pilot feedback. The F/I-13's gun system became a hallmark of innovation, proving the value of combining traditional weaponry with advanced computing and sensor technologies.
The F/I-13 "Cyclone" went into service on August 10th 1958, and is still in service today with many countries around the world.

@KPLBall my last build for the challenge, or is it? (Vsauce music) anyways I'm running out of ideas for the challenge. Anything you wanna see in particular? Idc about winning. I'm just bored, and I wish to experiment on things and the challenge is the perfect excuse.
