SU-57 (M3 T48 57mm GMC service in USSR)
The SU-57, or T48, is the only American or British vehicle to have been used solely in combat by the Soviets. This refers to the T48 in its 57mm carrier form and does not include converted vehicles, nor units captured by the Wehrmacht. The Soviets were satisfied with the American half-tracks, having received a total of 404 standard M2 and M3 half-tracks.The Soviets formed the Su-57 into a separate tank destroyer brigade, which consisted of three battalions of 60 vehicles each. They were also used in separate motorbike battalions where they would provide welcome firepower for these lightly armoured reconnaissance units. The first company to be equipped with Su-57s was the 16th Independent Tank Destroyer Brigade which took part in the Dnieper offensive in the Ukraine in August 1943. in August 1944 the 19th Brigade equipped with Su-57s fought in the battle of the Baranow bridgehead in Poland and some units from this brigade subsequently fought in the battles of Berlin and Prague in April and May 1945.The Soviet Union supplied 15 Su-57s to the Polish Army. these vehicles were used by the 7th Self-Propelled Artillery Brigade during the Polish-German battles of 1945.In combat, the vehicle would occupy a hull-down position behind a berm or ridge, with only the gun exposed. They were often used as supporting second line vehicles, taking advantage of the excellent medium to long range performance of the 6 pounder.A few vehicles did fall into Wehrmacht hands, a small number of which were used by the 14 Regiment Howitzer Regiment of the 105th Regiment of the 72nd Division.
