The M21 Mortar Motor Carriage was an American self-propelled gun used during World War II on a half-tracked vehicle. It was equipped with an M1 81mm mortar and an M2 Browning air-cooled machine gun. Produced by White Motors in 1944, only 110 were produced and served mainly on the Western Front, including Normandy, southern France, and the Ardennes. It was used by the US 1st, 3rd and 7th Armies, and also by the 2nd Armoured Division, which participated in its development. A total of 57 M21s were supplied to the French Army and the self-propelled gun was considered obsolete by 1945 as the 81mm mortar was not powerful enough to provide effective artillery support. The standard US tank and armoured infantry battalion Battalion Headquarters Company had a mortar platoon with three M21 or M4 self-propelled mortars, the M21 was mainly used to fire flares at night and to provide intermittent fire support to the infantry. With a total production of only 110 units, the weapon was not widely used.

Nice, but... Isn't the M2 supposed to be in front and the mortar at the rear?
