Happy new year!! This is a radical modification to one of my earlier (and very crappy) plane.
IL-40 is the direct descendent of a long line of Sturmovik family, including the legendary IL-2. Designed by Sergei Ilyushin, the vast number of IL-2 played a pivotal role in the defense of fatherland during the great patriotic war.

The IL-40M is the hypothetical modernized version of the IL-40. Different from the double-barrel shotgun configuration of the IL-40P, the IL-40M maintained the short air intakes of the first prototypes. This is done to fit the glazed nose cone for the third crew member (the missile operator). Other changes includes a more powerful engine (now Mikulin AM5M), and lighter gun armament (twin 7.62mm ShKAS instead of quad 23mm NS-23). The most prominent feature of this aircraft is the twin experimental PAB500 radio controlled glide bomb, which is among the first precision guided munitions. The PAB500 is an soviet attempt at improving the german Hs-239 glide bomb design, and could reliably hit slow moving targets from as far as 15km away.

Several new features were added to adopt this weapon system. First, as mentioned above, the glazed nose cone with flat optical panels provides vantage point for the missile operator to aim the bombs. Second, the internal bomb bays and tail gun are removed to save weight; at the same time 2 reinforced external hard points were added close to the wing base. Lastly, an enhanced antenna suite is also installed near the wing tips for the long distance radio control of the bomb.
