In 1909, the fictional aviator Lewis Mylden set out to make a monoplane. His creation was made out of ashwood and balsa, and was powered by a 40-horsepower engine with a 1:2 gear ratio. When he first flew the plane, he comfortably got 40 m (120 ft) off the ground, so later he decided to fly in front of a crowd.
