The F-3EJ Raijin EAV (-E stands for Electronic warfare, -J stands for Japan and EAV for Electronic Attack Variant) is the F-29 Jackal export variant for the Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF). The F-3EJ Raijin is specially designed and equipped according to JASDF request for a specialized electronic warfare attack aircraft, in order to reinforce and supplement the fleet of F-2 and F-35A fighters. The F-3EJ is a multirole fighter derived from the F-29S Jackal MSV, and manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and HarpiaDS for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, with a 60/40 split in manufacturing production. The main differences are located in the size, number of crew, control surfaces and avionics upgrades. The first 12 aircraft will enter service in early 2018, with a total of 32 airframes to be produced. The name Raijin has been selected by a JASDF committee, in order to give the aircraft a special identity for its distinctive operational role. Raijin is the God of Thunder, Lightning, and Storms in the Shinto religion and in Japanese mythology.
A request for proposal (RfP) has been issued by the MoD of Japan stating an urgent need for advanced electronic warfare fighter aircrafts, based on existing designs and capable of carrying modern ECM and jammer pods, but retaining all fighter capabilities. Work started between Kawasaki and Harpia in the EFS-X program, initially given the company designation EF-29J and began in earnest with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two manufacturers. The first prototype (A9008) has been rolled out in a record-breaking time of 4 months and began extensive test flights. JASDF decided to designate the aircraft in Japanese use as the F-3EJ Raijin, according to national fighter aircraft naming procedures. The Raijin has been certified for carriage and firing of the new ASM-3 anti-ship missile, as well as the current ASM-2 missile, for a secondary advanced maritime strike role.
The F-3EJ Raijin has incorporated all the previous modifications of the F-29K version and has been retrofitted with advanced ECM systems, increased internal fuel load and equipped with modern Harpia/Elbit-made integrated ECM jammer system, the SPJ-201 “Thunder Punch”. The SPJ-201 is an airborne integrated jamming system designed and manufactured by HarpiaDS and Elbit systems of Israel. Receiver equipment and antennas are mounted in a fin-tip pod atop the F-3EJ’s vertical stabilizer wing, while jamming transmitters and exciter equipment are located in outer-wing pods and under-nose ECM phasmatograph receiver/analyzer. The system is capable of intercepting, automatically processing and jamming received radio frequency signals in a wide electromagnetic range. The system receivers can also be used to detect, identify and direction find those signals, providing signals intelligence (SIGINT) and electronic intelligence (ELINT) either automatically or manually with many mission profile options and extended threat assessment and identification system (TAIS) database. Japan became the first nation, outside Israel, to adopt and incorporate this signal technology to its fighter fleet. The upgrade program includes some major modifications and new features, such as:
-New redesigned twin-seated cockpit
-Addition of Conformal Fuel Tanks (CFTs) atop the body fuselage
-Redesigned nose cone and new radome structure with IFF antennas
-Incorporation of retractable nose-mounted refueling probe
-Retrofit of the M61 Vulcan canon to the left fuselage side
-Improved weapons release and management system
-Redesigned dorsal air-refueling receptacle
-Incorporated retractable air-refueling nose-mounted probe
-Addition of two extra outer-wing slats for improved stability
-Redesign of empennage and tail-fin
-Extensive secondary systems’ renovation and retrofit of extra ECM sensors
-Engine mod for improved performance (Mach 1.1 @ Sea Level) and reduced fuel consumption
The F-3EJ Raijin EAV is a versatile, multirole, twin-seat and single-engine strike fighter designed for standoff jamming missions and anti-surface warfare in all-weather conditions day-and-night using sophisticated combat systems and cutting-edge-technology sensors. The aircraft possesses a low infrared (IR) signature and a reduced radar-equivalent cross-section to help prevent detection, while low vulnerability of structure and systems aid survivability and a compliment of integrated electronic countermeasures (ECM). JASDF selected to purchase only the twin-seat variant so as to maximize the netcentric warfare capabilities of the aircraft and reduce pilot workload by placing a specialized electronic combat systems operator in the back seat.
Extensive electronic countermeasure (ECM) are fitted to protect the aircraft, including passive receiver antennas on the tailfin and two active jammer assemblies that are mounted on both outer wings’ leading edges of the aircraft. Up to this moment, the F-3EJ Raijin is the only fighter aircraft of the Japanese air fleet capable of conducting extensive large-scale jamming operations but retaining all the mission capabilities for air-to-air combat and maritime strike. Further negotiations have been made with US, in order to be purchased modern air-to-ground weapons for the fighter aircrafts of the JASDF, but the current constitutional prohibition on this kind of munitions is blocking the successful sale procedure. The Japanese government initiated the institutional procedures for constitutional changes in order for the Japanese Defence Forces to acquire modern weapons and upgrade their efficiency.
In response to Japan’s MoD request for air-refueling capability, the F-3EJ has been retrofitted with a retractable nose-mounted refueling probe, retaining, although, the dorsal air-refueling receptacle on the upper backbone fuselage behind the canopy. That way the F-3EJ became the first and only fighter jet of the JASDF that is equipped with two different refueling systems, allowing it to be refueled by any tanker aircraft of NATO/US origin. The addition of the refueling probe component dictated the movement of the nose mounted M61 Vulcan 20mm canon to the left underside fuselage, next to the engine intake.
Various munitions can be mounted on the 13 aircraft pylons (one centerline, two underfuselage, eight under-wing hardpoints and two wingtip rails) including bombs, missiles and rockets; payloads of up to 3,000 lb may be carried upon the centerline and the two innermost under-wing pylons, while the outer pylons can carry up to 2,000 lb. Inner three under-wing hardpoints are plumbed for droptanks in order to extend the aircraft's combat range and make it a tanker aircraft for other fighters to be refueled. Wingtip rails are provided for infrared guided air-to-air missiles (AAM-1 and AAM-2). The F-3EJ is capable of carrying and firing new laser, INS and satellite guided bombs and has an all-digital modern glass-cockpit display with advance targeting equipment. The Raijin is the first Japanese fighter that has been certified for carrying and firing the new ASM-3 anti-ship missile, designed and manufactured in Japan.
The F-3EJ’s ATACNAV tactical navigation and attack system combines information from multiple onboard systems such as the air data computer, radar altimeter, GPS signal and advanced on-board powerful MMC-145J mission computer, manufactured by Toshiba Defence Electronics, to continuously calculate the aircraft’s location and define the weapons’ release and impact point.
The Raijin is equipped with a Japanese-made AESA radar (APG-2) with a maximum detection range up to 300 km. The main radar can simultaneously track, asses, prioritize and attack 15 targets (in the air, on land or on the water). The rear warning radar system can warn of attack from behind and deploys all the counter-measures automatically without needing to turn the aircraft. In addition, the F-3EJ aircraft integrates an Infra-red search and track (IRST) sensor in front of the canopy area, which is capable of passively detecting thermal emissions from air and ground targets in the aircraft's vicinity.
The F-3EJ Raijin is equipped with a Thales DamoclesNG target designation pod license-built by Toshiba and designated as ETP-1. It combines a NAVFLIR imager and IIR tracker, thus allowing the aircraft to designate, identify, and monitor multiple ground, aerial and sea targets to ranges up to 150km and transmitting target acquisition info to other platforms using the aircraft’s Tactical Data Link (Link16).
The JASDF has selected Elbit, and its main Japanese subcontractor Mitsubishi Electric as preferred tenderer to provide the EL/L-8822 “Grumbler” electronic warfare (EW) jamming pod for its F-3EJ aircraft, designated as EWP-1ER. The Elbit/Mitsubishi EW pod is a modern advanced power-managed system ECM jamming pod including an internal integral receiver. Its main task is to increase survivability of the aircraft during operations in a hostile electromagnetic weapon systems environment.
A missile approach warning system passively detects, tracks and neutralizes incoming missiles. The Super Liger is also equipped and certified to use a number of different communication standards and systems, including SATURN secure radio, Link-16, ROVER, and satellite uplinks and can be used as a C3 platform in the battlefield.
