1949 XVI Liberator

NOT my platinum build!
This is my first entry for General360's alternate WW2 RP.

These aircrafts were produced in the thousands in a week a single factory could build 500 of these cheap and efficient planes,
Designed to be able to use old British and American Radial engines the plane was cheap to build and run, and it was reliable.

It was famously nicknamed 'Gerry Can' by its pilots,

One pilot of 248 squadron RAF came home from a mission with 457 holes in his areoplane, most caused by shrapnel or bullets,

The reason for its strange survivability was within the aircraft itself, it used a then top secret bracing method that used a triangular lattice instead of straight struts, it made the plane extremely strong, and then you had the 3in thick steel walled cockpit that protected the pilot, a self sealing fuel tank, and a pressurised cabin, aswell as backup control wires and bullet proof glass bubble canopy.
The plane was armed with a 50mm cannon in the nose (it's modded to have a slow rate of fire I hope that is allowed if not please remove it)
And 8, 50 calibre vickers guns in the wings. It also carried as default, 4 250ib bombs and Two unguided rocket pods, these could be removed and drop tanks could be added for greater range.

The engine powered a contra rotating propellor with a total of twelve blades, (another reason for its good survivability)

Whilst being somewhat out of date in the speed and power category the plane was still efficient at attacking up the kills against jets,
And anyway over 800,000 were made in factories in, Unoccupied Scotland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States of **MURICA** (thought you would like that last bit)

The engine usually depended on where the plane was made and performance did vary widely from type to type.

The combat history is too vast to list bit I will let you know that the liberator was in service with all of the following.

Feet Air Arm
Royal Air Force
Royal Australian Air Force
Royal Canadian Air Force
Irish Air Force
United States Army Air Force
United States Navy
Many were sold to middle eastern countries and various African nations but mostly in small numbers,
The USSR also bought 20 planes

Enjoy
