This is my second attempt at TBD. The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was a single engine torpedo bomber employed by the USN during the early stages of WW2. TBDs (when going on a torpedo run) had two crew (Pilot and gunner). It could also be used as a level bomber, in such case a third crew member (Bombardier) was required. TBDs are most imfamous for their disastrous attack by VT-8 during the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where all 15 aircraft of the squadron where shot down with all but one of squadron's pilots and gunners where killed for no successful torpedo hit. The TBD suffered from its sluggish nature, the fact it was obsolete at the point of service entry and the fact its torpedo (initially) had an 80% failure rate. TBDs did see limited success from December 1941 to June 1942. They aided in the sinking of the light carrier Shoho during the Battle of Coreal Sea in May 1942. The Battle of Midway was the last time these aircraft flew into combat.
