The Messerschmitt Bf-109 was a single-engine, single-seat fighter operated by the German Luftwaffe during World War II.
First flown in 1935, the Bf-109 overcame prototype competition from the He-112 and remained the Luftwaffe's primary fighter until the end of the war.
The Bf-109 was equipped with advanced systems for its time, including a monoplane, retractable main landing gear, sealed windshield, and an all-metal fuselage.
On the other hand, its armament and the way it was mounted were difficult. The original plan called for two machine guns on top of the nose section and a motor cannon that penetrated the engine and came out of the tip of the propeller spinner. However, vibration and other problems could not be solved, and it was not until the F model that the motor cannon was installed.
During the long operational period, many types were produced, including the E type (nicknamed "Emile"), which was equipped with a Daimler-Benz DB601 engine. In the E-4 model, the windshield was shaped like a rectangle, which was more productive. This was followed by the later F-type and later models, and became one of the Bf-109's distinctive features.
Another drawback of the Bf-109 was its short range. In the Battle of Britain, a long-range invasion, the Bf-109 had a range of only about 15 minutes over the United Kingdom, and it is said to have been one of the reasons for its defeat.
To overcome this disadvantage, the E-7 type was designed to be able to carry 300L tank augmentation tanks.
The Bf-109 remained in service until the end of the war, and its total production reached 33,984, making it the most produced fighter in history.
