[CLOSED] Cockpit Challenge - Due: May 31st 2023
THIS CHALLENGE IS CLOSED
Aircraft Cockpit Challenge - Due May 31st 2023
The focus of this challenge is to inspire more players to build better and more advanced cockpits into their aircraft.
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU BUILD:
Rules and regulations:
- Must be a successor, or send me the link in the comments. I can't mark your submission otherwise.
- Must be a new aircraft, specially made for the challenge. No submitting old builds.
- Can be any aircraft, fictional or a replica.
- Only airplanes will be accepted - No boats, helicopters, tanks or other vehicles.
- Part limit: 50+
- Make the aircraft a reasonable size
- Must be under 5000 performance cost, that is the max my computer can handle so anything more than that cannot be downloaded and marked.
- While appearance does not count for much marks, please do not make ridiculous submissions like egg planes, flying tanks or flying submarines.
- No mods please, only XML (Finer tuner and Overload) mods allowed.
- Three entries per participant. All decent submissions will recieve 1 upvote, but only the best will be awarded.
Tips:
- This is not a VR challenge, feel free to resize any of the cokpit parts as you desire, reasonably.
- Funky trees code is a great way to make modern cockpits look awesome. Based on my personal prefence, aircrafts with Funky Trees code used for the displays in the cockpit will have a higher chance of winning. If you do not know how to write Funky Trees code, I highly recommend you look at these three help sheets, in the order given:
1) https://snowflake0s.github.io/funkyguide/
2) https://www.simpleplanes.com/Forums/View/1616068/Tutorial-The-Basics-Of-Creating-Digital-Flight-Displays-Using-Text-Labels
3) https://www.simpleplanes.com/Forums/View/1042680/Funky-Trees
- You can copy Funky Trees code from other aircraft by selecting the text part and dragging it into the subassembly section at the top left. To put it into you aircraft, go to the sub-assembly section in the parts menu and find the text part again. Note, I will ONLY allow copying of Funky Trees code from the pre-loaded aircrafts (e.g. Wasp, Vertigo, Pigpen). Under NO circumstances are you allowed to copy Funky Trees code from other submission or community contributed airplanes.

RANKINGS:
1st Place (90/100): SEF-1 & F-16C
2nd Place (83/100): AE-5 & A330
3rd Place (80/100): A350
COMMENTS:
FIRST PLACE: F-16 – (90/100)
PROS:
Incredibly detailed cockpit, wonderful fuselage art and accurate replica of the F-16.
CONS:
The cockpit is slightly confusing, so in-game aircraft instructions are necessary to fly this plane. One elevator is not working, so safe and normal flight is impossible. I know this is a cockpit challenge, but handling and appearance was also included in the marking criteria because a plane with a good cockpit but can’t fly properly has no use for the cockpit and as a plane. Also, a good and detailed cockpit is of no use to the pilot if he does not know how to operate it.
FIRST PLACE: SEF-1 – (90/100)
PROS:
Love the idea of the ‘Scrap aircraft’! Taking main external parts from other planes, genius!
CONS:
No faults with the cockpit. The stall speed and max speed are too close, making it difficult to climb. No back landing gear, making for a bumpy landing. Tips over too much when landing. I know this is a cockpit challenge, but handling and appearance was also included in the marking criteria because a plane with a good cockpit but can’t fly properly has no use for the cockpit and as a plane.
SECOND PLACE: A330 - (83/100)
PROS:
Detailed cockpit, accurate replica. Handles very well too.
CONS:
The windscreen is too dark, making it hard to see out. Fuselage smoothing would make the fuselage look less disjointed.
SECOND PLACE: AE-5 – (83/100)
PROS:
Nice exterior design. I also love the radar screens in the cockpit!
CONS:
Must look down too much to access flight controls.
Handling a bit exaggerated
THIRD PLACE: A350 – (80/100)
PROS:
Detailed cockpit, accurate replica and good fuselage art.
CONS:
The windscreen is too dark, making it hard to see out. No yaw control in the cockpit, even though it is necessary for airliners so they can stay on the runway.
Well done!
Because there werent many submissions, and some people got the same number of points (Wow!), everyone is winner! Everyone got at least one plane in first or second place!
AWARDING
