X-55 ASCENDER IV
The Ascender IV is a modification of the Curtiss Wright XP-55-CS Ascender by Hedero. This plane has heavier weaponry including 2 AtG Bombs, 2 25mm autocannons, and a single 50mm cannon. One parachute is provided by the ministry in case of emergencies to give time for the pilot to bail out. The engine, instead of the planned Pratt & Whitney X-1800, is replaced by a top secret modified R-1890 Hornet, created in collaboration of P&W-Lockheed Industry. A striking visual change is the 5 propeller blades instead of 3, decided after intense wind tunnel testing. This prototype achieved previously impossible speeds , although damaging the airframe severely. Despite a promising future, the prototype was deemed too inefficient and costly to mass produce and is therefore reserved to high profile missions. Used in multiple missions such as the Undertaking of Skymar, The Bridge Barrage and escorting President Roosevelt several times throughout the war. Undergoing more testing and battle assessments, it is found that the plane was too heavy compared to others in the same size and weight range, resulting in a modification to the canards, giving them a higher angle of movement to assist in faster maneuvers. Massive changes to the interior were made to accommodate the weaponry, exchanging range and loiter time for firepower. With the strange wing configuration, the craft tends to point downwards after some time without any inputs, therefore pilots are told to use vtol to ensure the canards compensate for the movement. The control panel has been changed as well, with: B4- 25mm cannons B5- Parachute B6- 50mm cannons As the rise of jet engines is on the horizon, the Ascender's glory days are numbered, unless.....
