First flown in 1943, The Type 5, often referred to as ‘Stanley’, was the third fighter to be designed by Barrums Aviation. Its main features were its Nightingale 3 Engine driving a contra rotating propellor, and, unusually for its time, tricycle landing gear. Boasting high speeds and decent firepower, The Type 5 arrived too late for the second world war, but saw service in commonwealth air forces up until the late 1950s, when the last squadrons were replaced by Vampires and, in later cases, Supermarine Swifts.
