CBU-2/A and CBU-14/A (cluster bomb (munition) dispensers) - custom weapons
v 23Mc4-3
Feel free to include these in your build, just make sure to link this page and give me the credit! :)
(Probably) Fairly accurate replica builds of CBU-2/A & CBU-14/A cluster bomb units previously used by US military aircrafts. These are a type of cluster bomb units that release/dispense bomblets to the rear without dropping the whole thing.
CBU-2/A is for high speed/performance jets such as F-105, F-4, etc., and CBU-14/A is for lows speed/performance crafts such as A-1 Skyraider and OB-10 Bronco. These recreations somewhat simulate the function of the weapons.
Higher detail & lower detail versions included.
General information (about these particular recreations)
-Due to the way I built these weapons, I couldn't simulate retardation system (thing that reduces the speed of these bomblets). So the dispersion/spread will be dependent on how fast or slow you fly when you drop them.
-Dropping them at lower altitude & slower speed creates denser area of effect, which in turn increases the chance of destroying the target.
-Having more on your aircraft increases the ammo and affects the spread, but not the release rate (I don't think).
-Recommended release altitude above ground is about 30 to 50 meters.
Weapon attaching tips
- Hide the pylon
- Hide the connector rug (block)
- Show hidden parts
- Drag the connector to the pylon and attach.
Done!
CBU-14/A
BLU-3/B anti-material bomblets stuffed in a smaller dispenser for low-performance aircrafts. (I thought these were rocket launchers until recently.) Dispenser is SUU-14/A, which is made of six 70mm aluminum tubes banded at the center. (CBU designation depends on which combination of dispenser and bomblets are used)
Update Mar 6
I used pics of model kit of SUU-14, such as this one by Astra resin as the main visual reference.
http://dacoproducts.com/KAsr12.php
I failed to include this in the earlier description.
-114 bombs per unit
-Dimensions of the dispenser are roughly 2.065m long, 23.8cm wide, and 28.7cm tall. (Spec taken from CBU data sheet from BulletPicker)
-Weighs 113kg (loaded weight), weight change isn't simulated.
-High LOD = 40 parts, mid LOD = 22 parts, low LOD = 21 parts (fewer polygons than mid)
Aircraft in the pic is A-1 skyraider by otayahiromo8211 (modified and repainted). https://www.simpleplanes.com/a/WcWIJh/Douglas-A-1-Skyraider Very nice build.
(Aircraft is unfinished, don't ask about it)
CBU-2/A
Larger unit for faster aircrafts (jets basically). Dispenser is SUU-7A/A. Although this unit uses the same BLU-3/B bomb as CBU-14/A in real life, I decided to increase explosionScaler and diameter to compensate for wider dispersion compared to CBU-14/A under higher delivery speed (assuming it's being used on a jet) & the limited release rate due to in-game limitation.
I relied a lot on pics of 3D model made by +ravenclaw_007 on combatace forums as a general reference, as it was a nice rendition of the thing (and also because I couldn't fund any plan/profile drawings if the thing on the net). My model ended up having different proportions to the model however. I'm not quite sure why, but it could be that I made a mistake somewhere with the scaling (I couldn't tell how the thing was measured for the CBU data sheet).
-360 bombs per unit
-Dimensions are roughly 118.42in long, with diameter of 15.6in wide (max) (data from CBU data sheet. Couldn't be bothered to convert them to metric again)
-Weighs 340kg (loaded weight), weight change isn't simulated.
-High LOD = 60 parts, low LOD = 19 parts
Saw these in videos, and got an idea to use cannons on rotator to simulate the dispersion. I think the result is pretty good, considering the limitations of the game. I was originally going to build only the low-detailed loose recreation of the SUU-7/A / CBU-2/A, but I got some more info and reference materials on the weapons, so I decided to go for a more accurate replica (decision to build CBU-14 came afterwards). Building the rear part of the tubes was pretty fun.
If you want additional realism, I think you can paint the primary of each cannons in orange-ish yellow.

I probably don't need to remind most of you of this, but I just wanna mention that, like many other military equipments, these are an imitations of actual weapons of war, stuff that, you know, have killed or can kill people, and can or have caused suffering. I think it's perfectly fine to play with them in games and stuff as long as you remember that fact, and blowing stuff up is definitely fun (in video games!) but I think it's also a good thing to have this reminder every now and then, and think about it. Thanks;)

@WrightDefense
Go into cannon's xml (with Overload or something), and you'll find an attribute called "launchVolume." You just need to edit the number and make it 0.
@Capitainecheese
Thanks for the reminder
I plan to release it eventually, I gotta the finish the build
Will you release the f-105 with the snake eye bomb?
@Ooflauncher1
No prob, thanks for adding the link!
@Kendog84 oh shoot I forgor sorry
@Ooflauncher1
Oh well.. that's something alright, lol
Hey, could you link this page in the description of your build? Credit would be very much appreciated:)
I made this abomination: https://www.simpleplanes.com/a/lj16sZ/The-Convoy-crapper-9000 I call it the convoy crapper 9000
@Bismarck108th
Sorry, I don't have any plane of my own ready for upload. You should be able to download the Skyraider linked in the description, though, it's a 170-part build.
You can first save the weapon as a sub-assembly. Just grab them by the red block. You'll see a blue box at the top right corner of the screen, so drag & drop it there, and give it a name. Like, "CBU2." Now it's saved as a sub-assembly, and you can get it from the parts menu (sub-assembly section is at the bottom of the menu).
Now, once you've downloaded the plane (or any other), you can attach it to your plane of choice. Let me know if you aren't sure about the instructions.
Correction, sub assembly save box is at the top left corner
Really cool but could you make a version with a plane that already has it I’m on mobile and it won’t let me download a plane to put it on.
@C47skytrain
Me too. Even a smaller caliber explosive cannon (100mm with explosiveScaler of 0.5 or so for example) does enough damage to insta-kill/disconnect a 100000 HP block.
Also, got it, will notify you of the next weapon.
@Kendog84 i would like that, I just wish there was a way to make cannons have big explosions without the exorbitant amounts of damage
@C47skytrain
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed them:)
I certainly will keep making custom weapons for a while. I'll tag you on the next upload if you like.
These are AMAZING!!! I LOVE them! Please keep making more custom weapons :)
