The Fusil Automatique Leger (English: Light Automatic Rifle), or FAL, is a 7.62x51mm NATO battle rifle designed by Dieudonne Saive from Fabrique Nationale, a major Belgian firearms manufacturer. Saive was a close associate with the legendary John Browning, and was the man who finalized John Browning's Hi-Power after he died in 1928. It was his job to make a new semi-automatic rifle, resulting in the FN-49. This design was later refined to the FAL.

It was originally chambered for .280 British, an intermediate cartridge that would make it a modern assault rifle. However, America demanded a weapon that used a full-power rifle, and an agreement was made that America would adopt the rifle if they convert it to a full-power 7.62mm cartridge. America then snubbed the rifle in favor of the domestic M14.

Despite this setback, the rest of NATO, eager to replace bolt-action rifles designed in the last century, adopted the weapon. It would arm most of NATO and many nations around the world, on the order of 90 nations. It was the Right Arm of the Free World. A weapon of many conflicts, it was a soldier's darling.

However, Americans would change their mind about intermediate cartridges, adopting the M16 and its 5.56mm round in the 1970's. Other nations followed suit, and the bulky FAL was soon replaced by weapons of similar caliber. And the weapon designed for universal service was replaced numerous other options. While its time in frontline service is at its twilight, it will be remembered as a reliable friend, a defender of democracy and freedom, whether it be free enterprise, free speech, and free choice.
