The M27 AT was a project planned by the United States during WW2, to mount the high powered 105mm T5E1 Gun onto a well armored chassis. This resulted in the creation of the M27 AT with its own unique chassis without reusing an older chassis as the basis. Thus the M27 AT was born.

During the later years of the war the U.S War Department couldn't help but notice the lack of serious firepower when it came to 80% of the tanks the U.S were deploying in Europe. They acknowledged the Capabilities of the long 76mm and the 90mm M3, but were still unsatisfactory with their performance at greater ranges. The initial project was to mount the 90mm M3 Gun to the M27 AT however, upon news spreading of the German Tiger II the War Department immediately held production until a more powerful gun could be fixed. It wasn't until 1945 when a new gun fitting the performance standards of the War Department could be fitted.

The M27 AT was designed to survive a direct hit from the German Long 88cm Kwk Gun from beyond 200 meters at 0°. Along with being capable of destroying the Tiger II H frontally through the turret face beyond 800 meters.
