The Yakovlev Yak-38 (Russian: ??????? ??-38; NATO reporting name: "Forger") was the Soviet Naval Aviation's only operational VTOL strike fighter aircraft, in addition to being its first operational carrier-based fixed-wing aircraft. It was developed specifically for, and served almost exclusively, on the Kiev-class aircraft carriers.

Yes - the Forger. Apparently not a successful or well liked type, but still an interesting kite.

She is armed here with two "AS-7 "Kerry" ASMs and the associated targeting pod. I took the liberty of adding an "AA-8 Aphid" A2A missile on the stores point that is left.

I also thought it would be a good idea to stick a drop tank and a gun pod on a trolley, just in case you felt like mixing up the load out. She can also still make vertical take off (just!) with 4 X boom 50 hung under the wings.

So - the controls!!

AG1 - Light the lifting engines (vtol down for full throttle, vtol neutral for closed throttle
AG2 + vtol down - configure for VTOL (turn nozzles down, open intake and exhaust shroud for forward lifting jets)
AG3 + vtol down - wing fold
AG4 + vtol down - landing flaps (also used as speed brake)
AG5 - throttle balancing system
AG6 - Lights
AG7 - Drop all stores (if you need to lighten the load for a vertical landing)
AG8 - vtol stability assist

Yes... A little complicated, to say the least...

So - procedures!

Conventional Take Off

1. Activate AG5 (allows for full throttle on the main engines)
2. Deactivate AG8 (deactivates stability assist)
3. Throttle up
4. You are now airborne

VTO

1. Activate AG1 and AG2 (Spool up lifting jets, open up intake and exhaust shroud) and vtol full down.
2. Full throttle and trim 1/4 nose up
3. You should now be climbing vertically.
4. Gear up (gear command)
5. Now, gain a little height (at least 500 ft)
6. Now AT THE SAME TIME slide the vtol slider back to neutral whilst increasing trim to full nose up
7. With vtol at neutral and trim full nose up, activate AG5 (removes throttle limiter on main engine), deactivate AG 1 and AG 2.
8. You should now be in conventional flight. Good job.

VTL

1. Put your head between your legs
2. Pucker up
3. Pray to any god that might be listening...
