SCP-XXXX

Classification: Safe (special status)

SCP-XXXX was first encountered by three D-class personnel on an unrelated off world mission. After returning from their mission, the D-class began to show unusual symptoms including fever, slurred speech, photosensitivity, and mood swings.

It quickly become apparent to SCP staff that something had been missed during initial quarantine, and another "scrub down" and containment was ordered for the clearly infected D-class. Deep MRI scans showed each of the D-class had something infecting their spinal cords and spreading to their brains.

Further investigation, including a quite invasive brain surgery on one individual, revealed the D-classes where infected with brain flukes. Initially the infection was misidentified as Schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis might be devastating to its victims but is classified as a "common disease" by the foundation and did not warrant classification as a SCP. Foundation doctors began a regiment of drugs and series of standard operations to treat the infected D-class, all of whom recovered with little issue and were returned to active assignment in less than a month. The incident became a small footnote among many larger files and life, as chaotic and unusual as it is, moved on for the foundation.

Somehow, one of the brain flukes was missed and was smuggled out of the lab inside one of the D-class, unnoticed by staff. We now know SCP-XXX played a role in the containment breach, rather than a break down in protocols by duty staff.

Over the next nine months, the brain fluke and the D-class survived in a strange symbiotic-parasitic balance while remaining under the radar of foundation staff and scanners.

But no secret can be a secret forever, especially under the microscope of the foundation. The D-class (a common criminal in his past life with little signs of anything more than "basic common sense" and ability to take commands) was becoming more intelligent and inevitability staff would notice the clear change. The D-class would quote laws and philosophy, make important recommendations for his missions, and most telling of all: he was still alive. D-classes are not expected to have high survival rates, and this one was far exceeding expectations and statistics. The D-class returned from a half dozen high risk missions unharmed due to his quick wit and tactical mind. And in one case, single handily saved a core SPC task force from certain doom.

The D-class was ordered off mission and sent for further study.

While initial investigation showed nothing, scanning eventually revealed his brain had been 75% replaced by one brain fluke. The brain fluke had grown from an estimated starting size of 3-4 mm to 40 cm in length and weighing an estimated 300-400 grams. As plans where made to eliminate the D-class, the protocol would be halted by the D-class himself. He made a very cogent plea for negotiation and reclassification, followed by convincing scientific arguments that he was not infectious and a biological asset. The D-class also suggested improvements to many of the foundation protocols and cited his exemplarily record. He also revealed how he evaded detection, and how he could aid the foundation preventing this type of breach from happening again.

After his utterly captivating two-hour monologue, foundation executives withdrew the disposal order, and sat down with the D-class.

Over the next three years, the D-class had his status withdrawn, as he was literally not the man he was when he was "recruited" to the SCP patrols. The mingling of alien and human had created something new, and it enjoyed its new name given to it by foundation staff: Brian Flick.

Brian would eventually be allowed to join the foundation administration, becoming a valued team member and protocol designer. Brian was also cleared for "occasional civilian interactions" where he became an adept lawyer that fought for the underprivileged and underrepresented though out the world, and to protect SCP interests when called upon.

Brian was known to, in his own words "eat a few bad lawyers in court from time to time." While Brian was one of the smartest SCP members, he never grasped the subtleties of a good pun, which made him quite human after all.

For the foundation, Brian was one of the very few SCP allowed to benefit the public at large. It was something the SCP didn't get to do very often, and it was Brian that helped highlight this as a future goal in their updated mandates; which of course Brian helped write.
