In 1942, the growing need for more fighters was high. Two companies developed planes for a contest for an air superiority fighters, the P-53 and the P-37. Ultimately, the P-53 was chosen, but it was shortly replaced in 1943 by the P-65, P-59, and P-41, as it had many problems. The exposed landing gear caused the gear to get stuck in its bays often, and the gear placement made takeoff and landing near impossible. After 1944, all P-53s were retired
