This 737 series was publicly announced on August 30, 2011. The first 737 MAX, named The Spirit of Renton , made its first flight on January 29, 2016. The 737 MAX series received FAA certification on March 8, 2017. The first delivery was a MAX 8 on May 6, 2017, to Malindo Air , which placed the aircraft into service on May 22, 2017. The 737 MAX series has been offered in four variants, typically offering 138 to 204 seats in a typical two-class configuration and a range of 3,215 to 3,825 nautical miles (5,954 to 7,084 km). The 737 MAX 7, MAX 8 (including the 200-seat version, the MAX 200), and MAX 9 are intended to replace the 737-700, -800, and -900, respectively. Additional length is offered with the stretched 737 MAX 10. As of December 2019, the Boeing 737 MAX has received 4,932 firm orders and delivered 387 aircraft. It has already been sold to: Gol Linhas Aéreas, Aerolíneas Argentinas, American Airlines, United Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, TUI Fly, Air Canada , AeroMexico, Southwest, WestJet, Iceland Air, Air China, among many others.Following two fatal accidents involving the MAX 8 aircraft in October 2018 and March 2019, regulatory agencies around the world suspended the operation of this series until further notice. On March 19, 2019, the United States Department of Transportation requested a hearing in the regulatory process that led to the aircraft's certification in 2017. Boeing has implemented changes to the flight control system and pilot training for this aircraft and expects it to return to flight in mid-2020. Boeing suspended production of this series in January 2020, with approximately 400 MAX aircraft awaiting delivery, and resumed production in May 2020, at a slower production rate. Between June 29 and July 1, 2020, the FAA and Boeing conducted a series of recertification flights. Several tasks remain to be completed before the aircraft is cleared to fly again.
