Generally, the rule of thumb is to have the shortest landing gear possible, so the plane will not be tipping anywhere when taxi (and also looks a bit nicer)
and yes, a little bit too complicated.
Good start, I guess. Try to have fun with the blocks first, then move onto the fuselage blocks.
Like, try to make some aircraft you like (such as the cessna), then try to make them in fuselage blocks.
Generally I will recommend new starters to go for a fixed wing first, but you can also go out and make a helicopter (learn the physics from gator 2, but don't copy it)
I will give you something to start. It's not easy to control but hopefully you can get it somewhere
