GunBus too...

INTRO

This one's based for the most part on "Not an AC-119", made for the Counterterrorist Challenge. There was still quite a bit of stuff to add when I ran into the count part limit for the challenge.

For this new challenge I, ehm, added a few little things. So, what's new?

The freight doors now open to reveal quad 120mm recoilless guns. Their firing rate is relatively low, but hey... there are 4 of them, and they pack a punch.

Custom GBU-16 bombs for some extra bang. They're not really guided of course, but the SP targeting system already does a decent job anyway.

Custom AGM-65 missiles. These look better and hit harder than SP stock missiles.

Like the AC-119, the Gunbus II has small underwing jet engines providing the extra power needed to get all the hardware off the ground...

The plane is still not the Fairchild AC-119 by which it was inspired; my version is too agile and heavily armed for that. But it is, no doubt, more fun than an AC-119 would ever be.

This time around it has RAF markings. Just a random choice, that.

ARMAMENT

The Gunbus II still has much of the weaponry of the original, plus some extra.

  • Side-mounted CN-105-57 cannon (105 mm) with a 12 rpm firing rate
  • Side-mounted Bofors 40mm cannon with a 330 rpm firing rate
  • Side-mounted rotary Avenger cannon with a ridiculous firing rate
  • Fixed, forward firing CN-105-57 cannon
  • Fixed, forward firing Avenger
  • Quad 120mm recoilless guns, firing to the rear
  • GBU-16 bombs
  • AGM-65 missiles
  • 150 flares + 150 chaff in a Matra Phimat pod under the right wing

CONTROLS

The plane is easy enough to control on takeoff and in flight. Unfortunately, it still handles somewhat like a cargo plane. That's because it is one.

AG1 : freezes the plane's controls, and allows you to aim the side & rear mounted guns (scroll through cams until you hit the right one) using pitch and yaw. This admittedly works best with a joystick; with the keyboard, taking a decent aim is impossible. Oh, and remember: the 120, 105 and 40mm's are cannons, so you have to select them from the weapons menu. The Avengers can be fired by simply hitting space (so, simultaneously with the cannons if required).

AG2 : Switches on the gyro for stable, level flight. For when you don't want to run around in circles, but still want to take pot shots at passing hardware.

AG3, AG4 and AG5 provide different angles of "lean" for auto-circling. AG3 will start you off at only 20 degrees, which makes the plane fly rather large circles. Activating AG4 and AG5 will give you a greater lean angle/decreasing turn radius; de-activating AG3 and then AG4 increases the angle even more, the maximum with only AG5 activated. In all, this gives you a choice of 5 lean angles in approx. 10-degree increments.

AG6: opens the plane's freight doors at the rear, and allows the quad 120mm's hidden in the cargo bay to be selected.

AG8 : turns off the lights...

I hope the extra features are good for some extra fun...

would'nt fireing a recoiless weapon in an enclosed aircraft kill everyone inside it?
