The A-4E Skyhawk Early (M), as operated by the Israeli Air Force (IAF), marked one of the initial waves of Skyhawks delivered to Israel under the U.S. Military Assistance Program. These early-model A-4Es, later locally designated as “Ayit” (Eagle), laid the groundwork for what would become a long and storied service life within the IAF. The “M” designation typically referred to minor local modifications or mission-specific fits.

Powered by the Pratt & Whitney J52-P-6A turbojet engine, the A-4E Early variant had a top speed of 675 mph (1,086 km/h) and supported a maximum ordnance load of 9,900 lbs (4,490 kg) across five external hardpoints. Though less advanced than later Skyhawks, the A-4E (M) was capable of precision strike missions, notably utilizing early guided munitions like the GBU-8 HOBOS (Homing Bomb System), a TV-guided glide bomb.

Key features of the IAF A-4E Early (M) included:

Early integration of guided munitions like the GBU-8 for precision ground strikes.

Simplified yet rugged avionics and weapons delivery systems, ideal for austere conditions.

Strong performance in both high-intensity wars and routine border patrols.

Backbone role during the War of Attrition, helping refine IAF tactical strike doctrine.

Despite being an early model, the A-4E (M) proved its worth in frontline combat, often flying multiple sorties a day from dispersed desert airfields. Its small size and nimbleness made it hard to hit, and its bombing accuracy was a point of pride for IAF ground-attack pilots.
