Description
The Yakovlev Yak-19 was Yakovlev's replacement for the Yak-15 and 17, which although promising could only be modified to a certain extent. The Yak-19 was another good fighter from Yakovlev and was only rejected by the Soviet Air Force because of its subpar performance compared to the MiG-15, an extremely strong contender. Unlike the Yak-19 the MiG-15 had fully swept flying surfaces, allowing it to fly much faster. Two prototypes were made, one with an unswept tailplane and one with a swept one. The planned armament would have been 2 nose cannons, another reason why the MiG-15 with its 3 cannons emerged victorious. The Yak-19 was also fitted with an afterburner, something the MiG-15 didn't have, and was the only reason it was able to compete somewhat against a much more advanced plane.
