Manual Transmission Demonstrator
Manual Transmission Demonstrator
Here is a simulation of a 5 speed manual (Dual Clutch/Sequential Gearbox, since there's no manual clutch) transmission within a Front Engine, Real Wheel Drive Longitudinal Drivetrain. It is design to simulate the functional behavior of such.
This system utilizes a set of Engines, Pistons, and Drive Wheels to carry out this function. For every gear there is an Engine, Piston, and Drive wheel assigned to it. When that Gear is selected via moving the VTOL slider to its position...
1) The Engine is Activated
2) The Wheel connected to that Engine is Powered
3) The Piston lowers that wheel to where it has grip.
The Wheels exploit a glitch where flattening them creates a space of collision below. This is to make them easier to hide in a car body.
For those without basic understanding of transmissions, Lower Gears (Gear 1, 2) bring higher acceleration but limited Top speed, Higher Gears (Gear 4, 5) bring lower Acceleration but greater Top Speed. From Gears 1-5 you go incrementally from High Acceleration and Low Top Speed to Low Acceleration and High top Speed.
Controls
Throttle for throttle, Roll for Steering.
Use the picture below for reference in operating the transmission. Lower Gears have a higher Acceleration while Higher Gears have a higher Top Speed.
Start in first gear and work your way up as you gain speed, the fourth and fifth gear have an exaggerated low acceleration in order to show the differences in gears, so you'll come off sluggish if you try to accelerate in the fifth gear.
Subassembly Use
Grab the Assembly by the forward most engine and pull off, you will take off the entire thing and can save it as a subassembly.
To install into your car, attach via this same engine and nudge it into place. Nudge and scale down any of the parts where needed.
If you want a front wheel drive drivetrain, simply move the drive wheels to the front axle. For AWD, make one copy for each piston and Drive wheel, attach, and position over the other axle.
Adjust the vertical position of the drive wheels so that they will deliver no power unless their gear is selected and their full power when that gear is selected.
Important: Due to SP being stupid if you save as subassembly it will come out of subassemblies without the wheels being powered by any engines. Thus you will have to manually set the wheels to be powered by the engines again.
Adjustments
Two main parameters should be tweaked when adjusting the transmission: Max under the InputController of the Engines, and maxAngularVelocity within the Resizable Wheels.
Max affects Acceleration for a selected gear
maxAngularVelocity Affects the Top Speed for a selected gear.
Set Max high and mAV low, for lower gears. Do the opposite for higher gears.
To set the car's Total Horsepower, adjust each engine to have the same desired Horsepower.
Free to use! Just be polite and Credit. Iteration and improvement is welcome!

nice
@XPlane10ProFlier Move the engines to the appropriate position, do likewise with the other parts
@MintLynx could you please add funky trees to your old Kiev Class Aviation Cruiser? I can't do it myself
I'm never getting these weird submarines man. Drives alright tho... on land at least. Bizzare
@An2k Whoa! That’s some pretty sophisticated FT use there.
Now what about manual
@MintLynx i somewhat did similar...on my "hammers buggy" ..tried one engine but with variable speed/acceleration via funkytrees but got issue with grip for crawling..hope you would still make upgraded versions of this
@An2k I actually tried doing this with one engine and different tractions, it didn't work so well. I have recently learned that the grip of a tire can be adjusted via the extremum and asymptope values in overload however so in theory they might make that work.
@MintLynx okay thxs ..btw since this use separate tires and engines..this concept may work with tires xml adjusted for higher grip ..like low range engine speed like 10mph or lower with lotta grip..like for rock crawling..but i havent tried..and idk if its possible to hide those tires attached to pistons..love to see innovative builds
@An2k I see the problem, start in first gear, that puts you up to speed fastest, then shift gears as you gain speed to reach further speed. The high gears are intentionally slow in acceleration in order to somewhat exaggerate and better show the differences in gears.
Help.. i must be doing something wrong? How to move forward?...tried moving vtol to highspeed like on picture and trim controls but only reverse have work.
I would like to see more like this! Keep the great work up
@NotSoNormalPioneer Since it lacks the exact mechanisms of a manual transmission it sadly lacks the ability to break like that
