The Mil Mi-24 is a combat and transport helicopter made in the Soviet Union. This helicopter was put into service in 1976 by the Soviets, and is currently used by 30 other countries. The NATO code for this helicopter is Hind, and variants are identified by adding the lettersMil's "Hind" series of helicopters were a favorite during the Cold War and are constantly being modernized, including by the Russian Armed Forces. This heavy helicopter is capable of carrying out various roles on the battlefield, both in peacetime and war, and has been seen in various wars from Africa to the Middle East and Russia.

The Mi-24 is based on the Mi-8 “Hip” transport helicopter and incorporates systems and subsystems from the Mi-17 series. The original Mi-24 had a “glass house” cockpit, very different from the tandem cockpit. The helicopter body is highly adaptable (can be adapted as needed), capable of carrying up to eight combat-ready troops or passengers or four stretchers containing patients. Its "stubbed wing" system allows for the carrying of large amounts of weaponry, with the standards being rocket pods, rifle pods, anti-tank missile systems. This wing system also allows the helicopter to be equipped with air-to-air missiles for self-defense. A machine gun is also attached to the nose.

The Mi-24 was seen in the Soviet war in Afghanistan where it was frequently targeted by the US Stinger surface-to-air missile system. The Mi-24 also had a popular effect on the 1980s Iraq-Iran war against the US AH-1 Cobra. These helicopters have been used in the Nicaragua Civil War, Sri Lanka, Invasion of Kuwait, Russo-Czech war, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, Ivory Coast and Congo. The Hind series is a popular alternative in many countries where military equipment is increasingly expensive.

The Hind-D model was a turning point for this helicopter as it featured a new (fully armored) cockpit and a 4-barrel powered turret. Although this helicopter is not a perfect system, it is fair to say that it is still at the forefront. Interestingly, the US has several of these helicopters for training purposes. Hind is also known as "The Crocodile" or "Devil's Chariot".
