Hart Arms "Roanoke" Experimental Attacker
After the "Croatan" night fighter lost out to the Northrop P61 Black Widow, all existing models were put into storage. In 1950, the CEO of Hart Armaments managed to secure four T45 "vulcan" cannon prototypes from General Electric.
A Croatan fighter was rebuilt into a jet powered aircraft designed to carry an experimental pivoting cannon system. The four cannon units are attached to swivel mounts built into pods that carry their ammunition.
The cannons can pivot to fire both above and below their center. A targeting camera under the fuselage tracks at the same angle as the cannons, allowing greater precision against ground targets.
Though Hart Arms was unable to find an interested buyer for the design, the existing Roanoke model has been maintained by the company and is still combat ready.
