In the 1990s, in order to train new bomber pilots, China converted the Y-7 into the HYJ-7 bomber trainer, adding to the prototype a bomb targeting bay, bomb bay (on both sides of the aircraft) radar, and other equipment, and the aircraft is still in service with the PLA today.
