The XF-11 is a military spec plane designed by Howard Hughes. The U.S. Military ordered 100 models, but only 2 prototypes were developed. This is due from Howard’s test flight of one of the models resulting in an engine failure and crashed into the Beverly Hills Country Club. Howard did indeed survive the crash. The second prototype, however, was a success, but manufacturing never got underway. This plane is what also led to the U.S. wanting Hughes to build the plane we all know and d love, the H-4, or the Spruce Goose.
