F-4S VF-151
The F-4S, is a US Navy and Marine Corps F-4 Phantom variant. The F4S, was an updated version of the F-4J and F-4N. The F-4S saw only limited service with the US Navy, due to the introduction of the F-14. However in the late 70s and early 80s, the Marine Corps (they didn’t get the F-14, since it did not have a ground attack capability at creation) and Navy (for the USS Midway since it couldn’t use the Tomcat), needed a modern fighter. The best base they decided would be an upgraded F-4J/N. The F-4S is the only US Navy/Marine Corps Phantom to have ever carried a gun. The F-4S was phased out in 1986, in favor of the F/A-18 Hornet. Shown here is a VF-151 F-4S aboard USS Midway, 1981.
