Work on the G-2E Air Defence Fighter (ADF) began almost immediately after the G-2D was released. The Air Force complained that the other G-2 variants are too bad at dogfighting.
The original plan was just to upgrade the G-2D by adding a Canard wing. However, the navy figured it would be too expensive to convert their G-2Ds, leaving only the Airforce willing to convert theirs.
Two G-2Ds were sent to a factory to attach Canard wings onto them. However, news reached of a new engine being successfully developed.
The Airforce wanted production of an "Air Defense Fighter (ADF)" Variant, utilizing the new, lighter and smaller engine and the Canard wings, along with ground attack capabilities removed.
The G-2E ADF variant was eventually completed, boasting a powerful T/W Ratio of 7,5. It became a staple of the airfoce to this day.
