Japan Railway DE 15 Locomotive with Russell snowplow head
This 5-axle, diesel hydraulic locomotive is used by then JNR and now multiple current JR operators. Usually coupled with russell snowplow head to clear snow in areas of snowfall in Japan. When not used to clear snow, this engine is used to pull regular services and excursion trains for JR West and JR Hokkaido.
This model has 2 types of russell snowplow. The front one is designed to clear double-track lines, having a plow blade in one side and plows the snow away from the adjacent track. The back one is designed to clear single-track lines, having a simple middle plow and move the snow away to both sides of the track.
The prefix 'D' is for diesel-powered locomotive. The prefix 'E' means it has 5 powered axle.
