M4A3E8 Sherman 'Easy Eight'

47.9k Phantomium  7.3 years ago

Quite a shame that there are too few decent replicas of this iconic WWII tank. That's why I decided to make one :)

Officially designated as M4A3(76) W HVSS and often nicknamed 'Easy Eight', the M4A3E8 was one of many modifications of the M4 Sherman tank. Weighing in little over 30 tons, the E8 has much better armament compared to its predecessors while also using a Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS) which improved its offroad capabilties.

Entering service in late-March 1945, it didn't see too much action but it surely served the US forces well. It's often compared to its 'twin', the M4A3E2 'Jumbo', the latter being much slower and boasting thicker armor.

Controls are very simple:
AG 1 for hull MG. AG 8 for main 76 mm gun.
VTOL+Trim to turn the turret/elevate the gun.
Pitch+Roll to move around. Keep in mind it has mobility similar to real-life so it won't do races around. It is adviced that you get up to 34 mph at most to keep it even more realistic.
I tried to keep the part count as low as I could and also add lots of little details to it. If people want, I can easily upload a mobile-friendly version.

@Pilotmario The first Sherman turret? That's extremely hard to do. The shapes on it are nearly impossible to reproduce in the game.

    @PhantomBladeCorp Thanks.

On the other hand, I don't think anyone really did a good original Sherman turret.

@Rodrigo110 No it's not. Think of the people with iPhones (Android isn't much of a hazzle). They will struggle quite a bit with this.

    Thanks. It's for an RP.

The Paternian Army is one of the factions in the Paternian War, also known as the Second American Civil War, the other being the Southern Confederacy.

By 1941, the front lines have been settled, and the Paternians could now focus on building the logicustucs infrastructure to take over the South. And they wanted a tank with a 75mm gun.

First in line was M3 Lee. A fairly poor design, and requiring a large crew, but a good basis for improvement.

Then came M4 Sherman. The reason why most Paternian Sherman tanks had the 75mm gun was because of its adequate anti-armor performance and excellent HE round; Confederate armor was few and of poor quality, and the 75mm could easily defeat the M3 Stuart, M2 Light tanks, Vickers Mk. E, and even M1917/Renault FT in service.

Some were fitted as tank-killers with a 76mm gun in the small turret, but this was not a popular modification. A revised turret from the T23 prototype was installed and this proved superior.

105mm howitzers were installed on many vehicles, and were very successful. HEAT ammunition was available but never issued, as the armor threat was low and the HE shell could rip apart something like a Stuart or Mk. E. @PhantomBladeCorp

@ReischetzFokke The antenna on top of it is behind the 4.7 m height. It's not the tank itself.

@Pilotmario Fine. Also consider changing the paint. I used the olive drab as a reference.

Permission to recreate? I'm going to install standard small turret with 75mm M3, to recreate what most Paternian Shermans were armed with. @PhantomBladeCorp

@ReischetzFokke Well, for a tank I build without any sort of blueprints (only used some 3D models), I'm quite proud of how it turned out to be. Really, wouldn't have expected it to look this good.
Also, thanks for the upvote :)

@TheBroadside The Jumbo with the stock turret? That's OP af. Second strongest turret in the game after the T32 I think.
