A caliber made actually for rifles that would fire a pistol rounds, but at a faster muzzle velocity. Designed for hunting deer, smaller critters ( except birds like Sparrows ) and whatever else... except a bear or moose. The military does though adopt this caliber for some sniper rifles that wants a fast muzzle velocity, like I said before obviously.
